The Cacti and Succulent world is full of amazing species that thrive in a vast range of climatic conditions. From the towering giant Saguaro cactus in Arizona to tiny 'Living Stones' or Lithops which resemble pebbles and stones from their African habitat.
A Cactus is a succulent plant with the capacity to store water in its swollen stems and roots. Not all succulent plants are cacti.Cactus plants are mainly round or cylindrical in shape with a ribbed surface. The ribbing exposes less surface area to the sun thus cutting down on moisture loss. They also have sharp spines that are actually modified leaves that have evolved as past of their defence against their natural arid environment. All cactus have aeroles that are small woolly cushions from which both spines and flower buds emerge.Cactus flowers are short lived but very beautiful and come in all colours except for blue.Cactus make perfect balcony, courtyard and window sill plants and thrive on periods of neglect.During the warmer months water only as the soils dries out and during winter very little or not at all if unsure..
Most members of the Succulent family like well drained soils and preferably a full sun position. They make ideal pot plants and can be grown in all manner of containers with a good course well drained potting mix
Succulents are easy care, drought tolerant and attractive. Unlike Cacti which all belong to the same botanical family, there are succulent plants in many families, including the daisy family and the lily family and come in an amazing diverse range of form, foliage and colour types. Some are frost tolerant while others are very sensitive to the cold. They are best grown in an open sunny position and soils preferably free draining. If growing in pots allow to dry out between watering and use a slow release fertiliser during the growing season.
Please note that plants are often subject to seasonal availability and growers' stocking levels.
