Malaysia, New Guinea and Pacific islands

Common Names:

Variegated Devil's ivy, Golden Pothos

Up to 20cm (h) above soil if grown as a trailing plant, can get to 2m (h) if it is trained on a frame or post, can fall to 1.5m if left to trail from a hanging basket.

Growth Habit:

Can be grown as a hanging basket plant (trailing), in a pot or trained up a totem pole.

Indoors in filtered light position. No direct sun rays on the leaves as sunlight is too strong and will scorch many indoor plants. Keep away from direct air flow from a heating or cooling vent.

General Care and Maintenance:

  • For best results, grow as an indoor plant in Melbourne. Prefers temperatures above 15 degrees celsius.
  • Watering: Water regularly in spring, summer and autumn (during warm weather) but allow the soil to dry out slightly before watering again. This is best checked by scratching the top 2 cm of soil back with your finger. Water sparingly through winter. If you keep your home cool over summer, adjust watering accordingly. Over watering is a common cause for this plant to look sick or die.
  • Humidity: This plant prefers a tropical environment and will therefore benefit from regular misting with a hand-spray.
  • Fertilising: Use slow release fertiliser (this is already present in all good potting mixes) however it will need to be topped up every 3 - 6 months (depending on the brand and application rates). In warm weather, apply a liquid fertiliser such as 'Powerfeed' every 1-2 weeks.
  • When repotting, use good quality potting mix such as 'The Greenery Potting Mix' available in bags in store.
  • Prune to control growth, keep compact or encourage thicker growth. Remove dead or damaged foliage to keep plant looking its best.

Design Tips:

Stunning plant grown in a designer hanging basket, in a pot placed on a stand where the plant can trail down or in a pot trained up a totem pole. Often used in kitchens sprawling from a high shelf or in a book case. We sell advanced sizes (depending on grower availability) which are already mounted to a timber pole.

Air Filtration:

Removes benzene, trichloroethylene, xylene and formaldehyde.
