Portuguese Laurel

Portuguese Laurel

Prunus lusitanica

Size:
Height to 5m, width to 3m although can be kept pruned from 1 - 4m.

Position:
Full sun to part shade.

Care:

Incorporate compost into the existing soil at planting time, fertilise in Spring and apply mulch. Prune after flowering to maintain dense growth. Good disease and pest resistance.

Uses:
Hardy, fast growing, frost and drought tolerant shrub with lovely sprays of lightly perfumed, creamy white flowers during Spring. Flowers are followed by deep purple fruit. If fruit is not wanted, simply prune at flowering time or just after flowering if floral display is desired. Portuguese Laurel has dark green foliage with lush lime green new growth and red stems. Beautiful foliage provides perfect backdrop for other plants in the garden. Regular pruning will maintain a tight shape but reduce flowering, whereas annual pruning after flowering will create a more casual shape with plenty of flowers.
Ideal for dense screening. Grow as a hedge, espalier, small tree, standard topiary or pleached hedge. Ideal for large pots.
